What is the real talk With Reginald D's motivational coaching? Question and answer segment. I'm your motivational to coach Reginald D. I answer questions from listeners who are navigating real life struggles. Questions about faith, purpose, relationships, fear, confidence, and personal growth. My hope is that these conversations don't just inspire you for a few minutes, but give you practical steps to help you move forward. Today's question comes from a listener who wrote, Reginald Dean, I know God has a future for me, but I can't stop thinking about my past, my mistakes, my failures, and the people who hurt me keep showing up in my mind. How do I stop letting my past control my future? First, thank you for asking that question. I believe there are thousands of people listening right now who have asked themselves the very same thing. Maybe no one else knows what you're carrying. You smile, you go to work, you take care of your family, you show up for everyone else. But deep inside, you're carrying regret, guilt, disappointment, or wounds that never seem to go away. If that's where you are today, I want you to hear one sentence that I hope you remember long after this episode is over. Your past may explain you, but it does not have permission to define you. Let me say it again. Your past may explain you, but it does not have permission to define you. Your past may explain why trusting people is difficult. It may explain why you're afraid to fall again. It may explain why criticism hurts so much, but it doesn't get to decide who you become. Too many people are letting yesterday make today's decisions. Imagine getting in your car and trying to drive by looking only in the rearview mirror. You wouldn't get very far, right? Sooner or later, you'll crash because your focus will be on where you've been instead of where you're going. That's exactly how many people feel and how they live. They're so focused on yesterday's mistakes that they can't see today's opportunities. They're so busy replaying old failures that they miss the new doors God is opening. The rearview mirror has a purpose. It's there to remind you where you've been, not to determine where you're going. That's why it's small. The windshield is much larger because that's where your focus belongs. God says in Isaiah 43rd, chapter 18 and 19 verse, forget the former things, do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing. Notice what God says. He doesn't tell us to pretend the past never happened. He says, Don't dwell there. Don't unpack your bags and live there. Learn from it, grow through it, but don't let it become your permanent address. One of the greatest examples of this is Joseph. Joseph was betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and thrown into prison for something he didn't do. If anyone had a reason to become bitter, it was Joseph. Yet years later, after God elevated him to second in command over Egypt, Joseph looked at his same brothers who betrayed him and said, You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good. Joseph did deny his pain. He didn't pretend betrayal didn't hurt. He simply refused to let betrayal become his identity. And that's where many of us get stuck. We stop describing what happened to us and start defining ourselves by him. There's a big difference between saying I failed and saying I'm a failure. One describes something that happened. The other becomes a story you tell yourself every day. What story have you been telling yourself? Maybe you convince yourself that you'll never recover from a mistake. Maybe you accepted labels that someone else placed on your life years ago. Maybe you started believing that because you failed before, you always fail. But here's the truth: your identity isn't found in your worst day, it's found in God's grace. The enemy wants you to be your past is your future. God says your past is simply one chapter, not the whole story. So before we move on, I want you to think about this question. What memory keeps pulling you backwards when God is trying to move you forward? Because healing doesn't begin when your past changes. Healing begins when you stop letting your past tell you who you are. Now I'm going to show you how to begin doing exactly that using a simple practical framework you can start applying today. So, how do you stop letting your past control your future? You don't do it by pretending your past never happened. You don't do it by refusing to let it define who you are today. One of the biggest battles we face isn't with other people. It's with the story we tell ourselves. Think about that. After a failure, we often stop saying I made a mistake, and start believing I am a mistake. After rejection, we stop saying the relationship ended and begin believing I'll never be loved again. After disappointment, we stop saying things don't work out. And stop believing nothing good ever happened for me. Do you see the difference? The event becomes your identity. And when your identity changes, your decisions begin to change. If you believe you're not enough, you'll stop pursuing opportunities before you even begin. If you believe you always fail, you'll never take the risk that could change your life. That's why I believe one of the enemy's greatest weapons is shame. Shame keeps whispering, you'll never change. You messed up too many times. God can use other people but you. But that's not what God says. Romans 8, chapter 1 verse reminds us, therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Think about those words. No condemnation. That doesn't mean we're perfect. It means that through Christ, our failures no longer have the final say. So let me ask you something. If God has forgiven you, while you're still punishing yourself, some of us are carrying guilt that God has already forgiven. Every morning we replay the same regrets. Every morning we allow yesterday to steal today's peace. That's not the life God wants for you. 2 Corinthians 5th, chapter 17, verse says, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature. The old has passed away. Behold, all things have become new. Notice God doesn't say you're an approved version of your old self. He says you're a new creation. That means your identity isn't built on your biggest failure. It's built on God's grace. So how do we begin living that out? I want to leave you with something simple that you can remember every time your past tries to pull you backwards. I call it rise. Release. Release what cannot change. You can't be right yesterday. You can't undo every mistake. You can't make someone apologize. But you can't decide that what happened yesterday will no longer control tomorrow. I identify the lies you've been believing. Maybe it's I'm not good enough, it's too late, God can never use me. Those may be thoughts you've been carrying, but they are not the truth. Replace those lies with what God says about you. S. Speak. Speak life over yourself. Instead of saying, I never get through this. Begin saying, By God's grace, I'm healing, I'm growing, I'm moving forward. Your words shape your mindset, and your mindset shapes your future.

SpeakerEmbrace. Embrace the future God has prepared for you. Don't spend your life staring into the rearview mirror. Look through the windshield. That's where God is leading you. Before we finish today, I want to leave you with one practical challenge that you can do this week. A challenge that can help you. Stop caring yesterday and start walking into tomorrow with confidence. Not because I want to give you more to do, but because I want you to experience the real freedom. This week, find a quiet place and take out a notebook. And at the top of the page, write these words. My past and no longer decide my future. Then answer these three questions honestly. What memory do I keep revisiting? What lie has that memory caused me to believe about myself? What truth God's word will I choose to believe instead? Be honest with yourself. Healing always begins with honesty. Then I want you to take one step of faith. If you've been afraid to apply for that job, submit the application. If you've been putting off making that phone call, make it. If you've been avoiding counseling, take the first step and schedule the appointment. If you've been carrying guilt that God has already forgiven, spend time thanking him instead of condemning yourself. Freedom isn't found in standing still. Freedom is found in taking the next faithful step. Remember, you don't have to see the entire rope. God simply asks you to trust him with the next step. I want you to remember something. The people who accomplish great things aren't the people who never fail. They're the people who refuse to let failure become their identity. Every successive person has a past. Every strong person has scars. Every person God used in the scripture had moments they wish they could erase. Yet God still used them. Not because they were perfect, but because they trusted him. Maybe you'll listen today and you convince yourself that you missed your opportunity. Maybe you think it's too late to start over. I would like to encourage you. If God can take Joseph from prison cell to a palace, if he can restore Peter after denying him, if he can transform Paul's life after he persecuted Christians, then he could certainly write a new chapter in your life. Your story isn't over. Your greatest setback doesn't have to become your final destination. In fact, it may become the very testimony God uses to encourage someone else. So don't waste another day living in yesterday. Learn from it. Thank God for bringing you through it. Then leave it where it belongs. And I want to leave you with one final thought. Your past may explain you, but it does not have permission to define you. The rearview mirror was never meant to be your windship. It's there to remind you where you've been, not to decide where you're going. So stop letting yesterday steal today's joy. Stop allowing old mistakes to keep you from a new opportunity. God has already forgiven you what you confessed. Now it's time to believe what He says about you. Your past is a chapter in your story, but it's not the title of your life. Keep your eyes on the road ahead. Keep trusting God, keep taking the next step. Because your best days are not behind you. They are still in front of you. I want to thank my listeners for the question, and I truly hope it helps people today. If today's conversation encourages you, please share this episode with someone who needs the reminder that their past doesn't have to define their future. You never know when the conversation can become the turning point in somebody's life. And if you have a question that you would like for me to answer on a future motivation and culture, question and answer episode, send it to R. Sherman realtalkwihreginaldd.com. That's all for today's episode, fam. I hope you found this episode insightful and helpful while you're building that road to your dreams. And always, thank you for tuning in. And until next time, remember this. Your circumstances don't define you. Your mistakes don't disqualify you. Your past doesn't have the final word. God does. So keep believing, keep growing, keep trusting, and never stop becoming the person he created you to be. Want by faith, not by fear. Thank you for listening to Real Talk With Reginald D
