The Gift in the ‘No’: Rising After Rejection and Disappointment”

Welcome to Real Talk With Reginald D’s motivational coaching question and answer segment where we turn setbacks into comebacks and scars into strategiesI’m your motivational coach; Reginald D. Today’s topic It’s one that hits every one of us sooner or later and that’s rejection and disappointment.

I received a question from a listener and it states.  “Reginald D… How do I deal with rejection and disappointment in my life?”

If you’ve ever been ghosted, overlooked, passed up, or left wondering why it didn’t work out… this one is for you.

I’m gonna give you real talk, deep insight, and raw encouragement. Because by the end of this episode, I don’t just want you healed—I want you armed.

So go ahead—grab your journal, find your space, and lean in. We’re about to shift some things in your spirit.

Now, let’s keep it real—rejection hurts.

It feels like a punch to the chest. Like someone said, you’re not good enough, even if they didn’t use those words.

But the reason it cuts so deep is this: We tied the outcome to our identity.

Being rejected from a job, relationship, opportunity, or even family doesn’t mean YOU are the problem. Sometimes it means God was protecting you, preparing you, or positioning you. But in the moment?  Yeah, it stings.  It hurts and it digs deep.

Let me say this loud:

Rejection is a redirection—not a definition.

And disappointment? That’s the emotional residue of unmet expectation. But we gotta clean it up so it doesn’t turn into bitterness.

Let me tell you a story.

Imagine a sculptor standing in front of a massive, unshaped block of stone.

At first glance, it’s just a rock—rough, cold, and ordinary. People walk by and shrug. Some laugh and say, “That’s useless.” Others say, “It’ll never become anything.” Even the stone begins to believe them, silently wondering if it’s destined to stay forgotten and unfinished.

But the sculptor sees more.

He doesn’t just see the stone—he sees what’s inside of it. So he picks up his chisel and begins to strike. Tap. Crack. Shatter. With each blow, pieces fall away. With every strike, the stone feels pain, loss, and confusion. “Why am I being broken? Why is so much of me being chipped away?”

But the sculptor knows: the stone isn’t being destroyed. It’s being revealed.

Every rejection you've faced… every disappointment you’ve endured… every time life said “no” or “not now”… those moments weren’t meant to end you. They were meant to shape you.

Yes, it hurts to be chipped away. But every hit is removing what doesn’t belong—fear, doubt, expectations that were never meant for you.

Eventually, the stone begins to see what the sculptor saw all along:

A masterpiece.
A warrior.
A survivor.

You see, rejection isn’t the end of your story—it’s part of your refinement. Disappointment isn’t your defeat—it’s divine direction.

So the next time life breaks a piece of you off, don’t ask, “Why is this happening to me?”
Ask, “What is God carving out of me?”

Because the sculptor never wastes a single strike.

There was a season in my life where I thought why is this happening to me and I should have been asking what is God carving out of me.

Years ago when I had was laid off of a job. And was back to job hunting. And I felt that doors were cracking open, and I was so ready for the next level and a new opportunity

I felt like I failed and I felt rejected after losing that jog, But I remember God whispered something that changed me forever: “The door didn’t close because you weren’t good enough. It closed because I’m building something in you first.”

And, one Sunday after church I was looking through the newspaper for jobs and I saw a street name on one of the open positions.  I decided I was going to go apply the next day, and decided I would take a drive and find out where it was located, but I couldn’t find the street or where the place was at.  After driving around I decided I would just call and ask where they were located in the morning.  I was a ¼ mile from my home and God said look to your left and there was the road.  I Turned up street and the company  was closed.  God spoke to me and said get out the car and walk the ground and a scripture came to me where the soles of your feet will thread you shall possess it.  Went and applied for the job the next day and got it.  This position became the start to a career the elevated me financially, professional and to a level I didn’t expect.  Years later I learned that the GM had seen me talking to the assistant at the front desk when I was filling out the application and he asked her, who was that and she responded that was a guy who came to fill out an application for the position and he said that’s him and she said how do you know, he said I just know that’s him and I got the position.

Sometimes God doesn’t say “no.” He says, “Not yet—because what I’m about to do in you can’t be rushed.”  So the position I was laid off from wasn’t  where God wanted me to be, he had bigger plans for me.  Even though I was feeling rejection, there was a reason for it.

You ever notice that everyone God used powerfully in the Bible first went through a season of rejection?

Joseph was thrown in a pit by his brothers.

David was left out in the field when Samuel came to anoint the next king.

Jesus himself was rejected by the very people He came to save.

Let that sink in.

God never wastes a wound. If rejection was part of their preparation, why should ours be any different?

Now, were gonna  go deeper. Rejection reveals three  things:

Your level of attachment to approval.

Who or what are you depending on to feel “enough”? That’s what rejection will expose.

The weakness in your foundation.  If a “no” breaks you completely, then your identity might be rooted in outcomes, not in truth.

The strength of your calling. The enemy doesn’t attack the unqualified—he targets what threatens him.

Have You ever been disappointed, only to look back months or years later and say, “Thank God that didn’t happen”?

Disappointment actually clears the fog. It shows us what we thought we wanted—and makes room for what we actually needed.

And, Sometimes God disappoints your plans to align you with your purpose.

I want to equip you now—not just inspire you.

There’s way in which to process rejection and disappointment in a healthy, powerful way:

Grieve the loss—but don’t stay there.  Feel it. Name it. Then release it.

Speak truth over your life. Replace “I’m not good enough” with “I’m being prepared for better.”

Write a “release letter.” Pour it out on paper to the person, situation, or season that hurt you. Then burn it or throw it away.

Affirm your identity in Christ daily. Read verses like Jeremiah 29:11 - “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

, Romans 8:28 - “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

and Psalm 34:18 - The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit

and,, Let His Word speak louder than the wound.

One thing I want you to do is -- Get moving again.

Don’t let stagnation become your story. Start that podcast. Apply again. Love again. Try again and don’t give up

Now Let’s declare this together:

I am not what they rejected.

I am not defined by closed doors.

I am built for more than this moment.

I trust God’s timing over my own desire.

I am whole, even while healing.

I release disappointment, and I embrace destiny.

Alright family, it’s time for your challenge for the week ahead and I’m challenging you to do three powerful things:

Write a Rejection Testimony.

Choose one moment of rejection in your life and write out what it taught you. Turn that wound into wisdom.

Speak a New Story.

Every morning this week, say out loud:

“I am not what I lost. I am what I’m learning.”

Revisit a Dream You Abandoned.

Maybe it was music. Maybe it was writing. Maybe it was a business. Rejection buried it—but God is telling you to dig it back up.

Let your healing begin with action.

Rejection isn’t the end. It’s the beginning of redirection, resilience, and rebirth.

Let them say no. Let them walk away. Let the opportunity pass you by.

Because what God has for you… won’t miss you.

And, Now I want you to Remember:

You may have been rejected, but you're still chosen.

You may have felt disappointment, but your future is undeniable.
