Real Talk With Reginald D - Merchandise

Welcome to Real Talk with Reginald D. I'm your host, Reginald D. On today's episode, I have Steph Karras. He's a music artist, a writer, producer, a director, and a songwriter, and a six-time Emmy Yes, yes, man. Thanks for coming here and hanging out. I know you're busy and things like that, but I was excited when the agency reached out to me and wanted to see if I'd put you on the podcast, man. I grew up, I live in Florida now, so it's quite an opposite. I grew up up north. So I know about cold. That's probably why I moved to Florida. You know, we just, we had a farm as a kid. My first language is French. So I grew up in French Canada, the French part of Canada. And, you know, I always knew I was going to be a singer somehow. My mom first recorded me, I was three and a half years old and it was something that I knew I was going to do. It's interesting that I do know more, do both with movies, but it was something that I knew I was going to do at a young child, at least the singing part. And we were probably the only French Baptist in the area. So I grew up with a very, I would say, religious background. And to the point that it was, you know, I call this a religious spirit, you know, where it's more about religion than relationship. So I didn't really fully understand what a relationship with God was. And interesting enough, after I have achieved some success, then my career was kind of a roller coaster ride. So then, you know, we sold a bunch of records, probably half a million records, a little over that in Canada when we started, when I started. And then after that came into business very green. growing up on a farm with a religious background, all I knew is I wanted to sing. And so they made tons of money, the million dollar mark for sure. And then I ended up having to move to Nashville, living in my car, you know, feeding myself a dollar menu at Wendy's and, you know, showering into YMCA. But then that's when my relationship with God. began. It's interesting. So I found God outside the church in my story. But that led me to Nashville. And I did a lot of different projects. We did a project for the Special Olympics. At the time I was working with, do you remember Donna Summer? Yeah, I was working with Donna Summer on this album. And it was very interesting time because working with high profile, like her Kevin Bacon was also part of the project. and then having to go to my car at night. Don't tell anybody. So that was my humble beginning, I would Yes. And that's interesting. So you're living in your car. And how did you overcome those challenges? I mean, you're living in your car, but you're doing all this other stuff and these opportunities. I think you ended up being the square one again in life. And Yeah, I think I look back. I went through a lot of square ones. I just quit it that way. So how do you get out of it? You know, for me, I would say it's the grace of God. It's the understanding the also asking yourself the right question. You know, my wife tells me something funny, you know, well, she's a financial advisor, completely the opposite of me. Right. So it's like creativity meet a spreadsheet. But she always tells a funny story, you know, Oh, well, you know, maybe I had to go through this because it was supposed to be and all that. And would you say, well, I mean, you could just admit that you made a stupid decision. So so so but I didn't know better, you know, so a lot of times we don't know how to maneuver through through what's going on. And and I think for me. Living in my car made me ask the right question to myself and to to the God I serve today. And first of all, trying to understand the reason of this, you know, why are you given a desire to do something and then all of a sudden you're, you know, after achieving certain things, then it's taken away from you. What do I have to learn from this? You know, and understanding also to, how I say this thing is that I peel the onion. Like if once I find an answer to a question, then I want to know the motive behind the answer. And then the motive behind that answer. So to make sure that what I do today, it really is something that I'm called to do, not as a way to self-serve, but as a way to serve. And I think we're given certain abilities in order to do good things with them and to show that God is a good God and God is for you. See, I had to learn that, that God is for you, not against you. That was something that I didn't learn from the church, at least the one I grew up in. Now, we can't put everybody in the same boat, but for me, I had to understand that. If you're hungry for bread, you're not going to be fed with a stone. That's another part that also helped me understand the difference between, and I needed to go through that, to rewire my brain, understand the difference between religion and a relationship. I always tell people, Christ did not die to give you a religion, but a relationship. And that gave me wings in some ways, and it gives you hope. And it's through hope that you get out of things, right? So you gotta rewire, you gotta learn to get yourself out of your own way. That's a biggie. And when you do, then you try to stay focused on the right path, which is a minute-to-minute decision. Yeah, it is. One thing I'll say is that you gotta handle each moment the best you can. But a lot of times, and I said on a podcast some last week, is that sometimes being a square one, some people say the bottom or whatever you want to call it, sometimes it's part of the process. A lot of times in my life, I think I really hurt God the most when I was down and at my humblest point in life, and it worked. So what's your music? I listen to it, and I listen to a lot of music, trust me. Your music comes from a place. I hear different artists and different things and people saying things, but yours come from a different place, man. I can just feel it when you're singing it. It's coming from somewhere. So what makes you come up with this music and things like that? I feel like it's so authentic, myself. Why it's so powerful? Because Well, thank you for the kind words. I appreciate that. Like you said, I think it's from a place of pain at first, right? So you want to do things. You know, at one time I was going to, I was tired of seeing the same songs and I, and I wasn't looking for, I wasn't finding songs that wanted to express what I wanted to express or that was expressing what I wanted to express. And then I started writing that triggered me to write songs and like the awesome song. It's interesting. It was part of a project called My Shining Hour Story. It was a Christian project. It was a gospel project. And that song didn't fit there because it was more of a pop song. And then interesting enough, that was predestined, I think, because I didn't know what to do with it. And I liked it. I didn't want to put it aside. But I said, what's the purpose of this? And at the time I was reading a letter, somebody sent me a letter online from a 14 year old kid that had committed suicide due to bullying. And he left this letter behind, hoping that somebody would, you know, be touched by that. Because, you know, bullying is now the number one cause of suicide among young children. And so the more I dig them into understanding, because I was bullied as a kid because I was very shy, very introverted. But we didn't hear about suicide back then. So what is so bad today that is causing them to take their lives away? And so understanding it's a different dynamic, you know, home was still a safe place when I was a kid compared to what it is today. And kids today are left on their own. And worst of all, they're coming back from school with their device where it's following them, right? We didn't have that as a kid. And so now, Compare if you're bullied, if you're a guy, you're bullied, you get involved in a fight with two or three people, and then that's the end of it. And then hopefully the end of it. But if today you're getting bullied, the peer pressure for these kids is tremendous because they don't know if the whole school knows about it, right? Because it's spread out throughout all social media. So it's a different dynamic. And so the peer pressure is so hard and understanding that the kid or even a teenager, I mean, the frontal part of the brain that makes a rational decision is not formed yet. So every decision that they make is fueled by emotion. And so it's not formed until the age of 22, 25. So psychology will explain that very well. And so understanding this, I said, well, the real problem here is you're not gonna fight bullying by telling somebody don't bully somebody, because bullying has been there since the beginning of time. But if we can help them build some self-worth, and equip them to face the opposition and their value in what they think of themselves. And so that was the, and then all of a sudden the song, Awesome. was the perfect fit for that, because it says, you know what, I'm a child of God, and I'm awesomely made. It's not a Christian song per se, but it's based on Psalm 139, 14, where it says, I am wonderfully, fearfully made, and awesomely made, and this I know well. And so I wanted to remind this generation, and us too, what's going on inside. So this whole program was developed out of this song. Awesome. And then we go into secular schools and what we do is we remind them of what's going on. Perfect example. So let's say you start with one cell. That's day one. In three days, you become 16 cells. And today you're made of 100 trillion cells. So it's like little computerized little cells that are duplicating constantly. Every five seconds, you do this and you have 50,000 cells that are dying and 50,000 cells that are rebirthed. And then comparing the eyes, let's say, to the best cameras in the world. They can't even compare because your eyes are able to. So why is it that I can look at a distance? If you have a healthy eyes, that is right. If you look at the distance and you look something close and usually, you know, you don't need to focus. Right. So you have an instant focus. No cameras can do that. So we can do that because we are able to record over a million bits of information per second, sending it to your brain at 300 miles per hour, giving you an instant focus of what you're looking at. So when you think about that, that's all in you. that your heartbeat beats 100,000 times a day, and it has to push blood throughout 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Now, 60,000 miles of blood vessels is like going around the earth two and a half times every single day. So when you can, in a practical way, explain that to the kids, the value of what's going on inside of you, and a program was developed out of this, saying that no matter what your outside circumstance, is it cannot be affecting the internal aspect of who you are unless you allow it and so part of the program is that reminding them how awesomely and wonderfully they're created because we also talk about the power of words and understanding what your word can do and you know because oftentimes we say we end up you know becoming what we believe but we end up believing what we are told repeatedly and accept it as truth. So that's part of the program. That's what developed out of that song. So it's a mouthful of an explanation, but it was very interesting for me to basically use music now to say, hey, now I have a vehicle to remind this generation that they are awesome. And there's something in there that's dormant. And we develop out of this a series called The Secret Hero. It's a nine episode series. And so, I don't know, maybe that's what you feel when you hear some of the songs, but it comes from a place where I want to share something. So, you know, it's a deep love. I think that that's where it's coming from and wanting to do something because, you know, you can relate, we can relate to Right, exactly. And the thing I like about the way you're doing it is that, first of all, you understood you had an avenue to help the situation. You know, a lot of people don't understand the moments that are in, you know, why am I here? Why did I do this? You know, it's something behind. If it pushed you to do it, if God pushed you to do it, if his angel spirit to do it, there's something behind it. And then the understanding part, you know, I always say when you're dealing with, especially kids, and the way you just broke it down, you know, you have to break things down to kids to get them to kind of look at things in a different perspective. So check out the video. I think it'll move you because we just had a pre-film, which actually I'm excited. Just the video, the pre-film of the video, the pre-story has won an Emmy as a, you know, as something we do for the community. So I'm checking it out as soon as I get off of here. I appreciate that. So No. Growing up in a church, actually, I didn't like the music of the church because I grew up with such a religious strong background. And I'm able to have this sermon about this today. I mean, we can't put everybody, all the church in the same boat, but in where I grew up, you know, when you see people acting a certain way on Sunday and very differently on the rest of the week. So I think the church in general has done a great job to give God a bad name and I can't put them all together because it's not true. Today we go to a church, amazing, but our faith needs to be not in the preacher, but in God. And it's just a church should be more about the community. But I didn't like it as a kid because I felt forced to do something like that. And I thought I had something else to say. And today I do Christian music for different reasons, because I have such a gratitude to the Lord for where I've been and where he's taken me. And then I just want to do it because I just love him. It's very different. It's not being shoved down my throat. It's something that I love and I want Exactly, exactly. And the thing about it, I grew up in a Baptist church. I grew up with a generation of pastors and preachers, musicians and singers. We don't read music, none of that. We're just gifted to get up and play whatever we put our hands to. But one thing I didn't do, and I was like, I'm not going to be playing instruments because I didn't want to do it. I don't want anybody to play instruments on a Sunday. I am a motivational speaker. I'm a speaker. That's what I do. So I know where you're going when you're talking about things like that, because like I say, It's one of those things you learn from it, but you gotta understand you have your own direction, you got your own purpose that God has placed I think we all have a lane, you know, and that God has placed us strategically in a place so I can use the media today to share the gospel in a different way. It's like we do Christian films, but I don't want to do a story that's pink and rosy because this is not reality. You know, we go through things in life in order to learn and we go through opposition. You know, I always say the Christian life is not for the weak. So if people think it's weak, it's not for the weak, because we have to make decisions constantly to stay focused on what we are called to do. So it's for the strong. It's for the bold. But I want to be able to tell the story the way it is, not to color code it, so to Right, exactly. Exactly. So Steph, you've got a new song, Almighty. Yeah. The music video that shows the story of a woman with cancer. Yeah. That song came, I was looking for, the reason was very unattractive. I'm telling you the truth because I tell the truth. I was trying to clear some songs that I didn't write, that I performed, and it was so complicated to clear the rights for songs when you're doing songs in movies. And you're dealing with the rights of a song that you didn't write, even though you're performing it. You're not the writer of it. And the clearance is so difficult. And those who deal with that will understand very, very clearly what I'm talking about. And I got so turned off by the process and the paperwork that it needed to do that I said, God, you know what? I just want to go back and just writing. I just don't want to deal with anybody else's song. So I don't need to ask myself permission for anything else. You know what I'm saying? And so I said, well, allow me to write a song that will just worship you, just worship you. And I'll be able to just express my gratitude so I can worship you in truth and spirit. And I wanted to do that. And all of a sudden, I wrote the song. And the premise of the video The vision that was given for that, it was to see a good woman, a woman of God, who finds out the result that she has cancer. And her question is, why me? What did I do wrong? And so in her reality, when she's in chemo, she steps out of her own personal reality to reach out to somebody, in the story that is, to reach out and help others. getting out of her own self-pityness, you know, why me, why me, why me? So instead of that, she's going reaching out. And you saw, if you saw the video, you know what I'm talking about. So, and she's going praying for people and she's helping this kid. And so she's doing what we are called to do when we face opposition at that level. And then her real reality hit and said, well, now what am I going to do? So at the end, she gets a healing. when she gets to a place, and I understand not everybody gets a healing, you know, because God will do what he wants, when he wants, whoever he wants, and we're not here to argue about that, but she did give us a A recipe that please God is not for me. What am I facing? It's rather, let's do something nice for somebody else in spite of her reality. And that's why we wanted to show that in the music video. And it's interesting, the ending is kind of like, I don't know how you perceive the ending. Half the people that watch the video think she went to heaven. The other half says that she was cured. So I don't know how you perceive the ending of it. however people's perception is, but that was the premise of the song. And I'm so excited that I was able to release this and the impact it has. So that's our first for us. It had over a million views on YouTube, and that's the first time for me to get that high. So God is good. I tell you Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. And the genius part of and the beauty of it is that when people look at a video, They have their own mind, their own perception of what happened. And that's the thing about things like that, man. That's awesome. Yeah. So we have a movie. It's called Undone that you are producing. I don't know how much you can talk about that, but if you want to shed a little light on Well, this woman, it's a story. She's now become a friend. I've worked with her for 10 years now. She has a wide ministry, but she had a rough childhood. Grew up in a church again, was abused by a church member at the age of five, sexually abused, was bullied in school, learning disability, all of that. She had a guy friend who was a little older, was kind of her protector, but he was older when he turned 18, he went to the aviation. And so she ended up marrying the first guy that paid attention to her at the age of 17. Another church guy that abused her sexually to the point that it sent her to the ER seven times, to the point that she couldn't have children. So what she did, staying married for this guy for 10 years, thinking it's the right thing to do, then she's about to die if she would have left this place. And so she said, if that's what your Jesus is, I'm not interested. So she walked into a new world, left the marriage, left the church, and walked into a world of drug, alcohol, and prostitution. And she ran as a prostitute for 10 years. Now mind you, she was married for 10 years with that guy and ran as a prostitute for 10 years. And then one day she was invited to church and for one of her friend that was getting baptized. And so on a dare, she decided to go as high as a kite. And then during the worship, she had one of those whole experience where, well, what am I doing here? It's something that snapped her out. And then the wife of the pastor took her under her wings and told her the difference between a religion and a relationship with Christ and walked her through the book of Ephesians and allowed her to basically personalize it. You know, and that rewiring of the brain, and all of a sudden the film, so the film talks about the, you know, obviously the sad story, but 70% about the redemption part, because what happened to her after this, it took a while, but she ended up fostering this kid that was found on the street, a four year old, And then the Army guy, remember 20 years has been down, 10 years married and 10 years prostitution. The Army guy, which was her childhood friend, the protector, retired from the Army, was looking for a house, happened to knock on her door, because she had a house for sale. They fell in love, got married within six months, adopted that child, which is, the child looks just like her. So it was like a sister who gave birth to that kid. And then he encouraged her to pursue her ministry to help women that have been abused, and also her musical career, because she always loved music, loved country music and gospel music. So hired a bunch of musicians in Nashville, recorded two albums, and they did a remake of the famous song from Loretta Lynn, You Ain't Woman Enough, to take my man. Do you know that song? Yes. So she rewrote the lyrics to You Ain't Devil Enough to change God's plan. And somehow, in some ways, it got to the ears of Loretta Lynn, the writer of the song. And then Loretta had a heart for the broken, so she followed that lady, her ministry online, and decided to give her the rights of her song, of her new version of the song, You Ain't Woman Enough, No, You Ain't Devil Enough. And so the redemption part is so incredible when you think about that. And then, so the main character we're talking about, her name is Sherry Dameron, and the movie's called Undone. So that's the story of her life. And today she has a ministry online to help basically the rejects in the church, because she's been there. She talks boldly to them, but they accept it from her because she's walked in their shoes. So she knows what she's talking about. She speaks the truth very boldly. And recently she was telling me that they opened over 300 churches in the Middle East, online churches. So it's pretty impressive to see this. And I want this to come as a movie because so many people feel like they're not good enough to have a relationship or to pray to God. And so her story is so inspiring and inspirational. where she was and where she is. So nothing but Man, that is incredible. It's incredible. If you can't see God through that, I don't know who, I don't know what's wrong with you, man. That's crazy. And It was just, yeah, that's amazing. And beyond you can expect, you know, it just, it was given more. So yeah, we're working on that film. We're raising all the funds for the movie. If we get all the money needed, we're probably going to start shooting in February. We did the trailer already. Kind of worked backward. We did a trailer in order to help us raise the money for the film. And so it looks like the movie is completed, but it's not. It's just a So it's the holiday season. So you got a Christmas Yeah, that's a lighter movie. I decided to do it. It's kind of like a Hallmark slash Christian film about Christmas. And I did that with my wife. Did you watch a trailer of that one? No, I did. OK, so that's my wife in there. And it's just a fun movie. During my break, we just filmed a few things, and we turned this into this beautiful story. And the real star of the film, I'm going to show you the real star of the film. Hold on. There he is. That's the star of the film. He's right here. That's a little puppy dog that we have. And he plays a brat in the movie and who destroys all our stuff. And it's so funny because he's such a well-behaved dog. So I had to put some without revealing all my secrets. I had to put some chicken broth on a lot of the cable that he chews on. But it's a fun movie. It's a family movie. It's a musical. a little lighter, but it's the true meaning of Christmas. It's a funny light movie. Awesome. Awesome. It's on Prime, actually. You can watch it on Prime. It's on Amazon Prime. If Yeah, I got it written down. Trust me. Okay, good. Check it out. Yeah. So, Steph, Let's talk about this. If somebody is looking to pursue a career in music and a passion-driven industry, what kind of advice would To stay true to yourself. For me, I had to go through whatever I needed to go through. I didn't start in the Christian world. I started in the secular world because I had some understanding. I had to be truthful in what what's in, I think everybody is placed at a specific, a very strategic place. And you've got to be true to what not just feels right, but not just what seems right, but what feels right. And I think that's the, that's the essence, you know, and I always say to people, if you have to think about what to do, then you shouldn't do it because it's not something you think about. It's something that you know that you're wired to do. You know, there's not a lot of thinking involved, right? A lot of things happen organically. If the heart and the intention of the heart is sincere in what you do, then you need to Yes, absolutely. And I feel like you and I have kind of the same mindset. And I'm gonna ask you this question. Looking ahead at what you do, you know, what do you hope your legacy will be like? Could Well, you know, it's changed over the years. And as I'm, I think right now we're given an opportunity as the body of Christ to be very bold in this nation and to, to really work not as, as the body of Christ together. And what is the mandate for the body of Christ is to establish God's kingdom on earth. That's part of the Lord's prayer. And so we got to be mimicker of Jesus in what we do. And that's why I say Christianity is not for the weak, because if you have to be a mimicker of Jesus, it's not a weak task. And so for me, I think God has placed me in a lane where I could use the media to help. establish His kingdom on earth by sharing the Word. Like this Christmas movie we just translated to French and Spanish now, and we're doing Russian for next year. And so it's to expand the message of Christ, and who Christ is, and who we are in Him, not who we are personally, because it had really nothing to do with us. We're created for three things. In my understanding of the Scriptures, we're created to worship the Almighty God. We're creating to be grateful for what He has done through His Son. And we're created to intercede through actions and through prayer. And sometimes we have this, the other way around, we start with praying with requests, but I think we're called to worship first. And worship doesn't mean, if you're not a singer, you're not gonna be able to worship, but worship, there's many ways to worship, to live in gratitude for what has been given to us. And right now, I think time is very limited. We have to be bold as the body of Christ. and respect where you know my lane for me is media. I understood what Proverbs 4 20 meant for me when he tells us that we need to incline our ear, we need to keep the word in sight, and we need to let the word within our heart. So he's talking that we, in order to get the work done well, we need to hear, we need to see, and we need to feel. And that's what the media does. It's allowing you to hear, to see, and to feel. So that's the power of media. And that's where they were so powerful. In 2020, we all saw the power of media by paralyzing the entire world, right? And so we need to use the power of the media in order to unparalyze people, the opposite. There's such an agenda of fear around the world going on that, you know, we need to use the media in order to combat. There's not a spirit of fear that we've been given. It's a spirit of adoption. that we belong to the family of God. And that's, you know, I think we're waging a war against a defeated foe. So let's not waste time on that anymore. He's Exactly. And the thing about it, you know, I always say, and a lot of things I do, and the older I get, the wiser I get, you know, you got so much stuff going on, and then people pulling you this way and wanting to do this and wanting to do that. At the end of the day, if it doesn't align with my purpose, and if it doesn't align with Yeah, a lot of people come with it because the enemy will keep you busy. Busy is like the disease now of our lifetime right now. Busy, busy. You talk to people, I'm busy, busy. I'm busy, busy. So are you fruitful? right? I don't need to know how many people go to your church because how many people have accepted Christ? I'm more interested in that. I don't need to know that you have this mega church that's cost 30 million and it was paid in a year. I just need to know how many people are knowing Jesus Christ and taking the church to people. And so sometimes, you know, you get a lot of projects and and me having a career that's been up and down and up and down. Sometimes, you know, you're offered jobs and you're afraid to say no because you say, you know, because I've had hungry years. So I understand what it is to be hungry. But so I ask God to remove from my plate. what I can't digest properly. So that way, I don't want to do good things. I don't want to do great things. Yes. And think about it, like you said, it doesn't matter what you have or how much of this you have, how effective are you? Yeah. And that's the thing about it. I always tell my team around me, you know, I'm like, man, how effective are we? You know, you've got to be effective as a leader or whoever you call to do You can make a bunch of noise, but if you're not effective, you're not doing anything. Amen to that. So, Steve, what projects are you working on I actually, if you see behind me, the studio is right there. So, I was singing today. So, I wrote this new song and I'm preparing this music video that will come out in December, hopefully. I'm working on that. We just made the movie. available on Prime in French and Spanish on Amazon Prime. So I finished this last night. I actually uploaded last night. And so I'm working on that and working on the new movie, Undone. So these are the projects that are in So you got all these different languages. So you speak, what, Well, French is a language that I grew up with. And then I speak Spanish as well. And so Awesome. I've learned Italian, because I did a lot of classical songs, you know, which the big areas are all in Italian. So I learned Italian. So but then I got so confused between Italian and Spanish that I would kind of use a word in Italian and Spanish. So I still can read it, but Hey, you're doing better than most. I will say that. So let's ask Steph, how can listeners follow you on social media and All right, so well, go to stephkars.com. I think all the social medias are attached to the website. The YouTube channel is called StephKarsUpTV. Because we do a lot of different things in music. We do a lot of stuff for the anti-bullying organization. So it's basically uplifting music, uplifting television, rather than just music. And so this is called StephKarsTV. The Facebook is called, I think, Music by Steph. They all have different names because some people have stolen my name. So you do whatever you get. And Instagram is actually StephKars. So these are the three main social media that is available now. I got all the others as well, but I'm sure when you find your one, it'll start going all the other So yeah, well, it's just, it's just, you know, the social media thing is, it's so draining. So you got to have a person hired just for that because it really, it's time consuming. Yes. I'd rather work behind the camera or report than do any Yes, exactly. I'm glad my wife manages me and she does all the social media stuff. I'll be lost. I can't handle all of it. She's got a lot on her plate then. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, she does. She does.
